Search & Rescue for the Moffat Hills & Eastern side of Dumfries & Galloway

Moffat Mountain Rescue Team has been coming to the aid of walkers, climbers and members of the local community, from toddlers to the elderly since 1969.

The team primarily covers the eastern area Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, a large rural area which offers a wide variety of recreation and attracts outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and levels of ability.

What to do in an Emergency

If you are involved in an accident in the outdoors or on the hills/mountains, you must be prepared and know what to do and who to call. The main thing is to remain calm, assess the situation, then decide what to do:

Step 1

  • Make sure you and the group are not in immediate danger
  • Give initial first aid to the injured
  • Gather information:
    Locate your exact position (OS Grid Reference / What 3 words address) – for more information see ‘Outdoor Advice
    Name, Age, Nature of injuries / issue
    Number of people in party with any other contact numbers

Step 2

Call for help in the mountains, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Police and then Mountain Rescue. In areas of poor phone signal, consider sending a text (if you have registered your phone) – see ‘Outdoor Advice’;

  • Give your prepared details to the emergency operator
  • Stay in this location awaiting call back / response from Mountain Rescue / Emergency Services

Step 3

  • Keep warm and consider finding shelter / use group shelter
  • Discuss descending hill / finding other shelter / planned escape route with Mountain Rescue
  • Await assistance (Mountain Rescue can liaise with Ambulance and Search and Rescue services to coordinate the appropriate response)
