Walk 2 - Hartfell summit via Arthur's Seat

11.6 kilometres / 7.2 miles. Plus about. 2.180 ft / 665 metres ascent.

Description: Medium, long steady assent, for those new to hill walking, including older children and adults.

Leaving Annan Water hall the walk goes past Newton Farm and onto Bill Cleuch moor and up to Arthur's Seat (2,379 ft. / 720mtrs) and on to the summit of Hartfell. At 2.666 ft /808 metres Hartfell is the second highest Moffat hill. Return is by Arthurs Seat and Well Rig

An enjoyable & satisfying walk for anyone new to hill walking, good views over Moffat; Annandale and the Lowther hills are possible. This is the big hill behind Moffat, just waiting to be climbed. The terrain is short grass track, some boggy areas.

Parking: field opposite Annan Water Hal

Register: Annan Water Hall by 10 am.

"Legend has it that Merlin did frequent this area and had the power to chance himself into a deer.

"Hart is one term for a deer and the hill you climb over on the way to the summit is called Arthur's Seat.

"On the way back down - look out for the earth workings near the gate at the lower dike. The Selgovae Tribes frequented this area.
