Walk 4 - White Coomb from Grey Mare's Tail

20.6K (12.8 miles), approx 1095m (3592 ft) climb. Approx. 6 hours

Route: You will be bused to Grey Mare’s Tail then climb the path to Loch Skene heading up the right side of the loch to Lochcraig Head, cross to Firthhope Rig then a short ascent to the summit of White Coomb. From there cross to Raven Craig and on to Hartfell Rig and then Hartfell Summit.   From Hartfell join walk 2 back to Annan Water hall for well earned refreshments including a barbecue.

Terrain: Rough grass with boggy sections, indistinct path in places.The longest walk with stiff climbing. Conditions can be boggy underfoot in places, you need to be prepared for a full day in the hills, with stout footwear and appropriate clothing. However, you can be assured that if the weather is kind, the views on this walk will make it well worth the energy required for it.

Local Notes;

A "hanging valley" waterfall: the valley was scoured out by glaciers during the last ice age leaving the outlet burn from Loch Skene falling about 200 feet down a sheer and dangerous cliff face.

Sir Walter Scott wrote in Marmion:

"Where deep deep down, and far within
Toils with the rocks the roaring linn;
Then issuing forth one foamy wave,
And wheeling round the giant's grave
White as the snowy charger's tail
Drives down the pass of Moffatdale"

The area around these falls belongs to the National Trust for Scotland and is rich in wild flowers. Wild goats can sometimes be seen.

This walk affords some excellent and dramatic views of the Moffat and Dumfriesshire Hills.

Parking: Moffat Town Centre car parks
