Young walker rescued from near Loch Skene
Sat, 16th Aug 2025At 17:38 on Sunday 10th August 2025 Moffat MRT were asked by Police Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service to assist in the rescue of a young walker in the Loch Skene area near Moffat.
The walker had been out on a family walk when they had fallen and sustained a suspected broken ankle. Due to a lack of phone signal the family had split up with someone remaining behind with the casualty whilst the remaining members walked back to the Grey Mare’s Tail car park to make the call for help.
10 members of Moffat MRT responded to the callout alongside the SAS, Dumfries and Galloway Police, HM Coastguard R199 helicopter and 5 members of Police Scotland MRT en route.
The SAS and R199 crew were able to access the casualty site quickly and administer pain relief as well splint the affected limb. 2 members of Moffat MRT ascended the hill on foot to join them invading the casualty into the helicopter.
The remaining team members assembled equipment in case an alternative route of evacuation was required as well as set up a landing site for the helicopter.
The helicopter then flew the casualty down to the designated site and handed them over to the SAS crew for on going care and conveying them to hospital.
We wish them all the best in their recovery.
If you’re in need of help on the hills, remember to dial 999 and ask for POLICE, then MOUNTAIN RESCUE.
