Colin Mitchell, MBE Honoured in King’s Birthday Honours 2024

Sat, 15th Jun 2024

Longstanding Moffat Mountain Rescue Team member, ex team leader and secretary has been honoured in the King’s Birthday Honours 2024 to be a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for ‘services to the community in Dumfries and Galloway’, including Mountain Rescue.

Colin has been a member of the team for 40 years and served as team leader, and more latterly as secretary. Colin has been involved in many team rescues, and wrote a book to mark the team’s 50th year anniversary in 2020, including many personal memories of team activity. He was a also member during the team’s contribution to the response of the Lockerbie air disaster in 1988.

He said to Sharon Liptrott of the Dumfries and Galloway Standard: “Receiving the letter to say I was being awarded an MBE made me feel honoured and humbled. We are now looking forward to the ceremony – wherever that will be – and I’ll have to buy my wife Pam a new hat for the occasion.”

Thrilled that the honour is for his “services to the community”, he said: “It is an honour to receive an MBE. But it is not just about me. For everything I have achieved there has always been a really good team to support me and whatever I am doing – and I am grateful to them all.”

Colin’s other community involvement’s include helping run the Dunscore Heritage Society, session clerk of Dunscore Church, chairman of the village hall committee, chairman of Solway Heritage, chairman of the branch of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in Dumfries and was previously chairman of Dunscore community council as well as running the village’s Cubs.

Congratulations Colin on a well deserved honour for the commitment to all of the above services to the community of Dumfries and Galloway.
