Walker rescued from Knockendoch near Criffel

Sat, 23rd Aug 2025

On Friday 22nd August Moffat MRT were asked by Police Scotland to assist in the rescue of a walker with a suspected broken ankle on Knockendoch in the Criffel area near New Abbey south of Dumfries.

8 members of Moffat MRT responded to the callout, alongside members of Galloway Mountain Rescue Team who were also asked to assist.

Paramedics with the Scottish Ambulance Service called for the team whilst making their way to provide casualty assessment and treatment of the injury.

Members of both Moffat and Galloway MRT were then able to package the casualty safety into a MRT stretcher before evacuating them from the hillside with the aid of a wheel and back rope.

The casualty was then transferred into our Moffat VW ambulance before being taken to New Abbey where they were handed over to the SAS crew at the vehicle for ongoing care and transfer to hospital.

We wish them all the best in their recovery.
