Double call outs to search for a missing person and rescue lost walkers

Thu, 23rd Oct 2025

At 04:51 on Sunday 19th October 2025 Moffat MRT interrupted our Joint Exercise weekend that was focused on Water Rescue and were asked to assist Galloway Mountain Rescue Team in the search for a missing person in the Glentrool area near Newton Stewart. The search lasted all day in rough terrain and poor weather before the team were stood down at 16:24.

On our return back to Moffat, the team received a further request for assistance at 17:03 to aid Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team (who had also already had 2 callouts that day) in the rescue of two walkers who had been caught out by worsening cold weather conditions following a minor injury slowing their progress. The teams worked together to locate the walkers using PhoneFind technology, who were found by hill teams between our boundary with TVMRT between Moffat Water and the Ettrick Valleys. They were walked off the hill in deteriorating conditions, and then taken to safety in a TVMRT team vehicle.

The team was finally stood down at 19:49. We wish the casualties the best in their recovery.
